2019 Shortlist

Chris Long

Finalist

Best in Engagement for Change

How Does This Individual Represent “Excellence in Engagement”?

The Philadelphia Eagles’ Chris Long believes that activism is no distraction for an athlete, and he has a Super Bowl ring to prove it. In a championship year, the defensive end donated his first six paychecks for the season to fund scholarships in his hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia following the racially-charged protests and tragedy that took place the year prior. Education has long been a cause Long has felt impassioned to promote.

In 2015, he established the Chris Long Foundation with three main tenets of philanthropy: clean water, military appreciation, and youth education. His latest clean water initiative raised more than $3M and funded wells that will provide clean water to over 200K people. Last February, his goal of building 32 clean water wells in East African communities, one for every NFL team, was met. In addition, the Walter Payton Man of the Year winner’s "First Quarter for Literacy" initiative that helps children gain access to books, donated 75K new books to children in 2018 alone.

Every yr for @waterboysorg , combat vets & NFL players summit Kilimanjaro, raising 💰 for clean water projects. It’s called #conqueringkili . In 2019, I want to bring my gigantic friend @beau__allen 19,341 ft up to the roof of Africa. He hasn’t trained. He’s scared of heights. He needs a little peer pressure. He’s agreed that if fans help raise 15k by Super Bowl Sunday, he’s in. Don’t let him off the hook. All proceeds go to clean water projects. Visit the link in bio!

We made it!!! @waterboysorg #conqueringkili was a big success. So many huge efforts by a lot of good men. We staggered summits in the end due to a couple dudes gutting it out through altitude sickness, but these men had already won before they took to the mountain. With their help, we will continue to deliver the gift of clean water to people in dire need. Thank you, dudes. You are now waterboys for life!!!
